Mykola Tomenko: Officials of the Ministry on Education and most Leaders of the Higher Education Establishments want to extend Paid Student Services, while neglecting the Law on Control over the Financial Support of the Education Establishments
Today, meeting the representatives of the student self-government in Chernihiv city, Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, declared that the Ministry on Science and Education and several rectors of the higher educational establishments have occupied a peculiar position regarding implementation of the Law of Ukraine "On Higher Education" as to the issues of the student self-government. Thus, they follow only 50% of this Law.
M. Tomenko declared that the part of the Law envisaging representation of the students in academic boards of the higher education institutions was followed almost by all the universities.
However, M. Tomenko emphasised that "many rectors support introduction of paid student services in the universities, while rejecting the legislative provision on the supervision over the financial activity of the higher education establishments."
Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament, explained that it was the main reason for him and the leaders of the Ukrainian Student Self-Government Association to hold the seminars in different regions to inform about the positive experience of higher education establishments that have already set up the student self-government body. Meeting the heads of the student councils of Chernihiv, Mykola Tomenko presented "Methodological Support of Implementation of the Law "On Higher Education" regarding Student Self-Government" published by the Ukrainian Student Self-Government Organization jointly with the Institute of Politics, with the assistance of M.Tomenko Fund "Ridna Kraina." He also explained the work of a new educational portal "Ridna Kraina" (www.ridnaua.org).
